Interview

The German Rammstein took almost four years to compose and record "Mutter" the successor of the very acclaimed "Sehnsucht" (Motor 1998). The first CD "Herzeleid" (Motor 1995) opened the doors of fame to them thanks to David Lynch's film music that includes two songs of that record.

Last year their label Motor Music (Universal) published an album recorded live in Berlin during the tour of "Sehnsucht" which didn't have very much success.

About the new work published in April, Raio X was talking with the bass player, Oliver Riedel, who despite needing a translator told us how has been the life of those intrepid German guys.

Raio X:How were the sales and the edition of "Live aus Berlin" published in 1999?Oliver:Not how we expected. At the beginning Rammstein just wanted to record a video but the editor thought that was better to record a CD too. The sales were lower than the expectations.

Raio X:Wasn't that because Rammstein only had two original CDs?Oliver:I don't think so. Like I said to you the initial idea was just edit the "Live aus Berlin" in video. It was the editor that wanted the CD too.

Raio X:When did you start working on "Mutter?"Oliver:The band went to an isolated castle in the south of France, in Mirabal, and between composing and recording we spent almost four years. The third original CD is very important in a band's life so we attended so much about "Mutter".

Raio X:That castle in Mirabal, is that a studio too?Oliver:Yes it is a really confident studio where Kiss, Sade, and so many artists recorded. The castle is very isolated, it has a warm climate and it has a huge vineyard.

Raio X:Does "Mutter" follow the style of the other works? Do you think the public likes this fusion of heavy and techno?Oliver:Yes this sound is the one that we like and if the public likes, better.

Raio X:How does the public understand your music sung in German?Oliver:I don't know if they understand it or not but the truth is that they sing the chorus of the most famous songs.

Raio X:How did you plan the tour of "Mutter?"Oliver:We will start in May in Europe during three weeks, then we will go to the USA and we will come back to Europe at the summer. If we would play in Portugal it should be at September/October.

Raio X: Which is your favourite song of this album and did you help to compose that song?Oliver:I really like "Zwitter" and we all helped to compose "Mutter." This album just like the others is the result of the group work of all of us.

Raio X:On this tour will you use the same style of effects as in the other concerts?Oliver:Yes we are going to use special effects and each song has a different component with lots of fire.

Raio X: OK I think that's all. Can you leave a message to your fans in Portugal?Oliver:This message is especially for the Portuguese musicians: sing always in you first language, for the music world doesn't need to be dominated by the Americans and the English. A hug for those who like Rammstein.
